Formula 1 is in a phase of constant change, as evidenced by the continuous proposals made by the leaders of the sport both regarding changes to the technical regulations – if we think of the new cars seen on the track this season and the new power units that will be used starting with the 2026 championship, but also regarding the sporting regulations.
The latter, however, are often the most controversial and difficult to accept for F1 fans, also because they are frequently aimed at seeking an increase of the show that can be artificial. Just yesterday, the Formula 1 management board announced an increase in the number of Sprint races, which will become from three to six next year, designed to spice up race weekends even more.
The same format of the Sprint weekend, however, introduced for the first time in 2021 and already modified this year with a different distribution of the points assigned to drivers, could be revised again as early as the 2024 Formula 1 season.
These are the interesting rumors reported by the German site Auto Motor und Sport, which dedicated a long article to the possible changes that Formula 1 would be working on behind the scenes to further increase the show on the track during the race weekends. Currently the Sprint race program includes the first practice session and qualifying on Friday, the second free practice session and the Sprint race on Saturday and finally the traditional race on Sunday. The qualifying session determines the grid for the start of the Sprint race and the result of the latter determines the grid for the actual Grand Prix.

The idea – rather bold, it must be said – that Formula 1 would be considering is to introduce a double qualifying. The first would be used to decide the starting grid for the Sprint race, while the second would be used to establish the starting order for the Sunday Grand Prix. The first qualifying round would take place on Friday, after FP1, while the second would take the place of FP2 on Saturday morning, before the Sprint race. It is not yet clear whether the two qualifying sessions would both have the same format or there would be changes from that point of view as well. What is certain is that it would be a new major revolution destined to divide the opinion of fans.
