Priority to Ferrari, but Carlos Sainz is exploring other options
Scuderia Ferrari has officially announced the multi-year renewal of Charles Leclerc without specifying a clear expiration date. However, the ‘multi-year’ nature of the new contract places the Monegasque driver at the helm of the Scuderia at least until the end of the 2026 season, the first characterized by the new regulations affecting both power units and cars.
Charles Leclerc has therefore ‘outpaced’ Carlos Sainz regarding the renewal announcement, or at least his negotiations with Frederic Vasseur and Ferrari’s top management took less time to reach an agreement compared to Carlos Sainz’s negotiations. According to today’s edition of the Italian La Stampa, the announcement regarding the renewal of the only driver capable of breaking Red Bull’s dominance in 2023 is “imminent,” and according to Repubblica, the prospect is for a two-year deal, thus also covering the first year of the ‘new’ Formula 1.
Today’s edition of the Spanish sports daily AS emphasized that Carlos Sainz’s entourage was not shaken by the announcement of Charles Leclerc’s extension: “There is no nervousness in the driver’s entourage,” reads the Iberian newspaper. “They are working on a one- or two-year contract, although some important points still need to be resolved. The priority is to renew with Ferrari for a long term. But there is a Plan A and a Plan B. Sainz is a target for other teams like Audi, which will enter F1 starting from 2026. But it’s not just Audi interested in Sainz.” – the Spanish newspaper informs.
