Charles Leclerc has unexpectedly become part of Slavia Prague’s build-up to an away football match in Baku, with the Czech club using one of Formula 1’s most recognisable Azerbaijan Grand Prix locations for a playful reference to the Ferrari driver.
Rather than unveiling its jersey for the match against Sabah through a conventional promotional photograph, Slavia Prague placed the shirt at the famous castle section of the Baku City Circuit. The choice was deliberate, with the club accompanying the image with a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that the kit had Charles Leclerc’s approval.

The photograph was taken at Turn 8, the narrow section of the Baku street circuit that runs alongside the old city walls and has become one of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix’s defining visual landmarks. Slavia Prague used the setting to connect its trip to Baku with Formula 1 and Ferrari rather than relying on a standard away-shirt presentation.
The club’s social media wording directly referenced Leclerc, making clear that the supposed endorsement was a joke rather than a genuine promotional partnership with the Monegasque. The humour depended on Formula 1 fans recognising the connection between the Ferrari driver and difficult moments he has experienced around Baku.
The Slavia Prague social media post therefore transformed what might otherwise have been a routine kit announcement into a crossover between football and Formula 1.
Why Baku’s castle section made Charles Leclerc the obvious reference
Baku has produced both memorable performances and difficult moments for Leclerc during his Formula 1 career. The street circuit is particularly unforgiving because walls sit close to the racing line, while the old-city section around Turn 8 is exceptionally narrow.
One of the most memorable incidents came during qualifying for the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, when Leclerc crashed at the castle section while Ferrari appeared to have strong pace. ScuderiaFans has previously examined how that 2019 Baku accident affected Charles Leclerc’s race and Ferrari’s strategic options afterwards.
That incident became one of the defining images of his early Ferrari career in Azerbaijan, making the location instantly recognisable to many Formula 1 followers. The wider history of the event can also be explored through the Baku City Circuit and Azerbaijan Grand Prix guide, which covers the distinctive characteristics of the street venue and its Formula 1 history.
Slavia Prague’s joke relies precisely on that familiarity. By placing the jersey beside the castle and linking it to Leclerc, the Czech club created a reference that motorsport fans could understand immediately without changing the purpose of the original football announcement.
Charles Leclerc joke creates Formula 1 and football crossover
The post also illustrates how recognisable Formula 1 locations can extend beyond motorsport itself. Slavia Prague travelled to Azerbaijan to face Sabah and chose one of Baku’s most internationally recognised sporting landmarks to promote the fixture.
The castle section has become synonymous with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix because of its narrow dimensions, unusual setting and demanding sequence of corners. It has also played a notable role in Ferrari’s history at the circuit, where the team has often shown particularly strong qualifying performance.
Leclerc has established an especially prominent relationship with Baku over the years, combining difficult incidents with major qualifying achievements. ScuderiaFans’ Baku Formula 1 records and Ferrari statistics detail the Monegasque driver’s record at the venue and the Scuderia’s wider history on the Azerbaijan street circuit.
For Slavia Prague, however, the objective was much simpler. A football shirt, one famous Formula 1 corner and a playful reference to Charles Leclerc were enough to turn an ordinary away-kit reveal into a social media post designed to appeal to both football and motorsport audiences.
