Should Ferrari have issued team orders? Sky team reactions
The battle between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc during the Chinese Grand Prix kept fans on the edge of their seats—more than any cup of coffee could. The two Ferrari drivers were separated by mere centimeters, with the risk of contact always looming. Yet both showed exceptional skill, fighting hard while still giving each other just enough space. Meanwhile, as viewers at home could barely watch, fearing a potential collision, the Monegasque driver came on the radio to underline just how much he was enjoying the fight.
It was a duel that kept attention high in a race that initially looked rather uneventful, largely dominated by Mercedes. At the same time, however, it gave George Russell the opportunity to close in on the two Ferraris, eventually overtaking them and charging toward second place. And although it is undeniable that the British driver would likely have passed both Ferrari cars anyway, the question remains: should the pit wall have issued team orders?
“For my own peace of mind, I would have wanted team orders,” joked Leo Turrini. “If they were fighting like that for a win, I’d be dead. But I appreciated Leclerc’s admission, when he said that Hamilton deserved the podium more than he did.”
Umberto Zapelloni then joined the discussion, stating: “At the second race of the season, when they are fighting for second and third place, you cannot disrupt the balance.” This viewpoint was shared across the panel, with Ivan Capelli adding: “It’s the right kind of competition within a team, both for car development and for the final objective, which is winning both championships.”
The dynamic between two elite drivers often creates a strategic headache for engineers, but it also serves as a catalyst for performance. As the season progresses, Ferrari’s management will have to decide whether to continue allowing this “free-to-race” philosophy or prioritize point consolidation to maximize their standing in the constructors’ standings against a formidable Mercedes outfit.
