Sky F1 warns Ferrari: 2026 is the final chance to secure Charles Leclerc’s future
The future of Charles Leclerc at Ferrari will depend on the start of the 2026 season: the final chance for the Scuderia to keep hold of its “Chosen One.”
The post-race discussions in Las Vegas reignited a topic that has been weighing on Ferrari for months: the future of Charles Leclerc. During the Sky Sport F1 debrief, the commentators agreed that 2026 will be the decisive turning point for the Monegasque driver. According to Davide Camicioli, the opening races of the new technical cycle will be crucial to understanding whether Charles Leclerc can truly build his long-term future in red.
Ivan Capelli expanded on the idea, noting that the 2026 regulation changes will completely reshape Formula 1, making it inevitable for top drivers to reassess their situations. He described that moment as “the year of truth”: if Ferrari’s new project works, the partnership can continue; if not, Charles Leclerc will have every right to look for a more competitive environment.
Matteo Bobbi identified a very precise timeframe: the first four or five months of the 2026 season. In that period, he said, the Monegasque driver will understand whether the new car has the potential to win or whether he will once again find himself watching others fight for victories. And if the second scenario unfolds, Bobbi said it would be understandable for the driver to consider alternatives on the market.
Roberto Chinchero stressed that this scenario will not involve only Charles Leclerc: “I believe [Leclerc] is in the same position as Max Verstappen and George Russell.” With the start of a completely new technical era, every top driver will look for the most competitive structure capable of fighting for championships.
Carlo Vanzini added an internal Ferrari angle: “Ferrari must define roles and the organisational chart of who speaks, who has the right to speak and, above all, who reports to whom. A clear structure is fundamental: they haven’t won since 2007.”
Marc Gené pointed out that many drivers will closely watch the impact of the new power units, while Vicky Piria summed up the whole situation by describing 2026 as an “earthquake” destined to shake the entire grid, pushing drivers to choose between economic stability and the ambition to win.
The general message emerging from Sky’s analysis is something that has been clear for a long time: the future of Charles Leclerc will depend entirely on Ferrari’s response to the new 2026 regulations. And this time, there will be no margin for error.
No more excuses after 2026
The message from Sky’s experts was crystal clear: the 2026 regulation change is the last get-out-of-jail-free card for Ferrari’s current project. If the SF-26 (or whatever it will be called) isn’t immediately competitive, Charles Leclerc – now in his seventh season with the team and still chasing that first drivers’ title – will have every reason to listen to offers.
Seven winless years for the team, zero drivers’ titles since Kimi Räikkönen in 2007, and a drivers’ market that will explode the moment the new cars hit the track in early 2026. Ferrari knows exactly what is at stake.
