Sky Sports F1 experts Ted Kravitz and Karun Chandhok are the most recent to express their belief that Scuderia Ferrari has a good opportunity to get back on top in the 2022 Formula 1 season.
Despite the fact that the Maranello team has been trying to play down confidence from within, there seems to be quiet hope that they can challenge Mercedes and Red Bull for race wins this year. The 2021 Formula 1 season was an improvement as compared to the 2020 campaign when Ferrari had to settle for a dismal sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, but hoping for a title challenge may not be yet realistic despite the fact that Formula 1 will introduce a new set of regulations which should give teams the chance close up the pack.
However, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who proved to be an evenly-matched driver pairing in their first championship as Ferrari team-mates lat year, may be able to fight for a few race wins, on specific tracks:
“I’m hearing a lot of positive moves out of Ferrari, a lot of positive noises out of Ferrari,” – British Formula One pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz explained during Sky F1’s latest programme reflecting on the dramatic outcome of the title-battle at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.

“The engine’s going well and they say the car is looking much more aggressive than it has in any of the recent Ferraris we’ve seen over the last two or three years.” – he added.
Fellow pundit Karun Chandhok continued by providing some more insight, mainly regarding the new power unit that helped the Italian side make a big step forward in the final stage of the previous Formula 1 season. This was a key factor in Ferrari’s fight with McLaren, as the Maranello team eventually managed to finish P3 in the Formula 1 Constructor Standing:
“I had a couple of conversations with people just before Christmas and they were very optimistic because they feel they made big gains on the power-unit side. They are coming back not quite on a par with Honda and Mercedes, but not a million miles behind and they are confident that side of it will be okay. On the chassis side they have been able to focus a lot of resource throughout last season because they haven’t been in a championship fight, unlike Mercedes and Red Bull, so they are very optimistic they will be in the fight come the start of the season.” – Karun Chandhok explained.
Scuderia Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies put into perspective their hopes of becoming title challengers by saying “you would need to be very naive to think it will be easy to close the gap” to Mercedes and Red Bull”.
