Scuderia Ferrari failed to improve during the decisive Q3 session and missed a major opportunity to fight for the front row, while a flawless performance from Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen allowed him to take a surprising and impressive pole position ahead of Sunday’s race.

Oliver Bearman, who committed an infraction during a red flag period in Free Practice 3, will serve a 10-place grid penalty. Meanwhile, Mercedes-AMG junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli will drop three positions on the starting grid as a result of a penalty carried over from the incident he was involved in during the previous round in Austria.

The qualifying session was marked by a few light rain drops, which slightly reduced grip and made the Silverstone circuit more slippery. In Q1, Franco Colapinto caused a red flag after running off the track and being unable to rejoin; track marshals were required to intervene and remove his Alpine Formula 1 car.

Both Ferrari drivers came alive during Q2 after narrowly escaping elimination in the opening segment. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, each with only one flying lap attempt available, recorded the two fastest lap times of the session. However, both Williams Racing cars were knocked out in Q2 and will have to aim for a recovery drive in Sunday’s Grand Prix.

The fight for pole position in Q3 was tight, with the session determining the starting order for the race scheduled to begin at 16:00 (Italian time). McLaren’s “Papaya” duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris initially raised the bar, but Max Verstappen—despite a challenging start to the weekend—delivered a brilliant lap to claim a spectacular pole position.

Oscar Piastri secured second place, with Lando Norris right behind in third. Despite promising performances during Friday practice and Saturday morning, the two Scuderia Ferrari drivers could manage no better than fifth and sixth on the grid, with Lewis Hamilton ahead of Charles Leclerc.
