The starting grid for Saturday’s Sprint at the 2026 British Grand Prix has now been finalized following an action-packed Sprint Qualifying session at Silverstone. Lewis Hamilton delivered an outstanding performance to secure Sprint pole for Ferrari in front of his home crowd, capping one of the Scuderia’s strongest Fridays of the season.
Silverstone hosted the fourth Sprint Qualifying session of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign after the previous Sprint events in Shanghai, Miami and Montreal. While many expected Mercedes or Red Bull to dominate on a circuit that traditionally rewards straight-line speed, Ferrari produced a surprise by emerging as the fastest team throughout the decisive sessions.
Lewis Hamilton converted that pace into pole position, while Charles Leclerc completed another competitive performance to secure a place on the second row. Mercedes remained firmly in the fight thanks to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, although George Russell was unable to match his teammate’s pace during the final phase of qualifying. McLaren also endured a more difficult afternoon than expected, with both drivers finishing outside the top five.
The Sprint Race is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 13:00 Italian time (12:00 BST), with valuable championship points available before the main qualifying session later in the day.
How Sprint Qualifying unfolded at Silverstone
SQ1: Ferrari immediately sets the pace
All 22 drivers began the opening segment on the mandatory medium-compound tyres, with Lewis Hamilton immediately establishing himself at the top of the timesheets.
The Ferrari driver posted a benchmark lap of 1:29.273, finishing just over one tenth of a second ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, confirming the Scuderia’s impressive early pace. Isack Hadjar continued his excellent recent form by securing third place, while George Russell and Liam Lawson also comfortably progressed to the next phase.
The first eliminations of the afternoon included both Haas drivers, both Cadillac entries and the Aston Martin duo.
SQ2: Ferrari and Mercedes emerge as the main contenders
The second phase began with additional intrigue after ten drivers were placed under investigation for allegedly exceeding the maximum delta time while preparing their qualifying laps.
Despite the uncertainty, Lewis Hamilton remained untouchable, once again finishing fastest as Ferrari continued to exceed expectations.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli produced another impressive lap to move into second place, while Charles Leclerc stayed firmly among the frontrunners. George Russell faced a much more difficult session, only securing his place in SQ3 during the closing moments.
Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad also advanced to the final shootout, while Williams, Audi and Alpine saw their qualifying sessions come to an end.
SQ3: Lewis Hamilton delivers under pressure
The decisive eight-minute session began cautiously, with the entire field waiting several minutes before heading onto the circuit for their final attempts.
When the decisive laps arrived, Lewis Hamilton once again demonstrated why Silverstone remains one of his greatest circuits. The Ferrari driver produced a superb lap of 1:28.376, securing Sprint pole by the narrowest of margins.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished just 0.011 seconds behind in second place, while Max Verstappen claimed third. Charles Leclerc completed a strong performance by qualifying fourth, giving Ferrari an excellent opportunity to score valuable points in Saturday’s Sprint.
