Lightning threat in Miami forces spectators to leave grandstands
The rain that everyone had been expecting has now arrived in Miami, falling heavily across the circuit. Despite the decision to bring forward the Formula 2 and Formula 1 schedules by three hours, it now seems almost certain that, if the race goes ahead, it will be run in wet conditions.
The use of the conditional is necessary at this stage, because just minutes ago a crucial message was displayed on the circuit screens. Formula 1 officials issued an urgent warning asking all spectators to seek shelter inside designated safe areas or within the stadium to protect themselves from lightning strikes that could hit the area.
“Increasing rain and lightning approaching. Seek shelter inside designated areas or within the stadium.”
The decision taken overnight in Europe by the FIA to move the race schedule forward was not driven solely by the threat of rain, but primarily by the forecast of intense lightning activity expected throughout the day. In Florida, regulations prohibit any outdoor events from taking place during severe thunderstorms, making safety the absolute priority.
However, with several hours still remaining before the scheduled start, the situation remains fluid. Weather conditions could continue to evolve, and further updates are expected as organisers monitor the storm closely.
