In the latest video by leading German automobile magazine Auto motor und sport after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Michael Schmidt mentions Sebastian Vettel’s theory about the new tyres and the reason why Mercedes always seem to hit the ideal tyre window:
“The new Pirelli tyres are made so that blistering is prevented. That does not only mean that the tread is thinner but the whole tyre coat, the carcass is build differently, everything should stay cold. In the last few years Mercedes had the problem that the tyres were getting too hot (Mercedes was way above the tyre window), especially in the carcass. Mercedes never found a solution for that. According to Sebastian Vettel because of the new construction of the tyres and the thinner tread, Mercedes are slipping in that perfect tyre window now.”
Michael Schmidt adds: “On the other hand Ferrari and Red Bull have the problem that the tyres are too cold now. For that Ferrari have developed new brake drums (front and rear) seen in Baku. That means they got a little bit more control to keep the tyres in the ideal window. Unfortunately for them the temperature drop in qualifying happened and Ferrari once again did not make the right decision, acting a bit headless.”
Auto Motor and Sport’s Michael Schmidt also mentions that it is going to be difficult to catch Mercedes with that big lead now, considering how bulletproof their reliability also seems to be, but Scuderia Ferrari seem to have understood a little about their problem with slow corners, as the updates were working in Baku.
