Sebastian Vettel is not ruling out a return to a more traditional Formula 1 sound, but the four-time world champion has warned against treating V8 engines as a simple solution to the championship’s problems. As FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem continues to push towards a future built around V8 power units and sustainable fuels, the former Ferrari driver believes Formula 1 needs a much broader approach.
For Sebastian Vettel, nostalgia for the sound and character of previous engine generations should not be confused with finding the right technical direction for the sport. The German believes Formula 1’s future will depend on several different factors working together rather than one major regulatory change.
“I don’t think there is one solution that, on its own, can fix every problem. In Formula 1, people often look for that one idea that can change everything and immediately guarantee an advantage, but in reality the result always comes from a combination of different elements,” Sebastian Vettel explained.
Sebastian Vettel backs sustainable fuels despite caution over F1 V8 return
Sebastian Vettel nevertheless strongly supports the continued development of sustainable fuels. The subject has become increasingly important as Formula 1 considers what its next generation of power units should look like beyond the current regulations.
“I believe they represent one of the most important paths for the future of Formula 1 and motorsport. Their potential goes beyond this championship and can become a reference point for other categories as well,” Sebastian Vettel added.
The four-time world champion recently returned to Monza at the wheel of Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2002 for a demonstration run, bringing one of Formula 1’s most celebrated naturally aspirated eras back to life. The appearance formed part of an emotional tribute to Michael Schumacher, with Sebastian Vettel driving the Ferrari F2002 at Monza during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
Vettel also has concerns over current Formula 1 regulations
Despite his caution over presenting V8 engines as a cure-all, Sebastian Vettel is not entirely convinced by every element of Formula 1’s current technical direction either.
“As a driver, I don’t necessarily agree with every choice that has been made with these cars. But Formula 1 must continue to pursue performance, innovation and spectacle without forgetting its responsibility towards the future.”
It is a position that does not reject the possibility of V8 engines returning to Formula 1. Instead, Sebastian Vettel is warning against shortcuts. His wider view of the current generation of cars has also been clear since his Monza appearance, when the former Ferrari driver discussed modern Formula 1 after driving Michael Schumacher’s F2002.
For Sebastian Vettel, the future of Formula 1 cannot simply depend on how many cylinders its engines have. Sustainable fuels, technical innovation, performance and the quality of the spectacle all form part of a more complicated equation as the championship considers what should follow its current power-unit era.
