Spins, rides over the English grass, disastrous lap times as compared with his team mate, a tirade on the pit radio and only 10th and 12th places – Sebastian Vettel has two of the most disastrous Formula 1 race weekends in the history of Ferrari behind him. At the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, the German will therefore be given a new chassis, according to RTL information, to rule out a technical problem with the Ferrari SF1000 car.
Sebastian Vettel far behind Charles Leclerc
Since the Scuderia made a major change to the aerodynamic set-up, Seb has been far behind his teammate Charles Leclerc, although he “tries everything, brake earlier, brake later, choose a different driving line”.
Is it because of the German’s lack of driving skills? Nico Rosberg suspects something else. “We are talking about a four-time World Champion, one of the most talented drivers in the field,” said the RTL expert after the anniversary GP in Silverstone: “In my opinion, there must be something wrong with the car. Sebastian is not half a second slower than anyone out there, including Charles Leclerc.”
Rosberg therefore suspects damage to the car, to the aerodynamics, “sometimes it’s minimal things that are hardly noticeable. Sebastian should talk to Maranello right away and tell them, “Give me a new chassis. That is in Ferrari’s interest as well”.
Team boss Mattia Binotto, despite the ever escalating War of the Roses with Sebastian Vettel, was basically “open to it if it’s something that can help Sebastian. Whatever we can do is important. I leave it to the driver and the team to discuss it.” – he explained.
The stakes are high for Ferrari. In the constructors’ championship, Mercedes and Red Bull are already far ahead. Behind the Scuderia there are McLaren, Racing Point and Renault in waiting. There’s a lot of money at stake, too. In order to avoid slipping, the traditional racing team from Maranello needs a constantly scoring Sebastian Vettel – divorce at the end of the season or not. In return, Sebastian will receive a new chassis, according to RTL.
