Sebastian Vettel on Sergio Marchionne criticism after the last three races. Seb insists there is encouragement about the speed of the car.

Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel insists that Sergio Marchionne has never been unfair in his criticisms of the Maranello team, even though the president can often be outspoken in his assessment when things go wrong. In the wake of a difficult few weeks for the Maranello outfit, which suffered the Singapore GP crash and engine troubles in Malaysia and Japan, Italian-Canadian executive has once again grabbed headlines with some strong remarks.

His latest focus has been on quality control at Maranello, having claimed that Scuderia Ferrari needed to do much better in this area and that it has paid the price for ignoring it in recent years. While similar soundbites from Sergio Marchionne – including this year a claim that Kimi Raikkonen was a “laggard” – are often interpreted as bad news from the fans and media, Sebastian Vettel says that the reaction inside Ferrari to what Marchionne says is often completely different.

When asked the Ferrari president put too much pressure on the team, the German driver said: “No, but the feeling I have after a couple of years now is that many times the way it gets translated is a bit too harsh. So I think whatever he says, he is usually very straightforward and he is right. There is always reason for it. He is fair. But then people tend to make a little bit too much noise about it. Whatever he says in the press, he is saying the same things inside the team and even more straightforward. So I think for people inside the team it’s not a big news. But for outside it always seems to be a big news, and then this can create a bit of unnecessary turbulences I would say.” – the four-time Formula One world champion explained.

Sebastian Vettel says that Scuderia Ferrari has learned internally how to react when Sergio Marchionne speaks out, and that it is usually already working on the areas that are exposed as the problem: “I think the team learned how to deal with it. And as I said the most important thing s that it does not impact on us as a team. Mostly because he has a very strong connection to us. He is very involved and you know he is a very clever man. When he sees what is going on, he knows what is wrong and so on. And he is willing to win as much as we all do. We all want Ferrari to win. So in this regard I don’t think he is actually putting pressure. I think the way that press sometimes translates sounds like pressure.”

Despite the fact that Sebastian Vettel’s title hopes have suffered a blow with his recent troubles, he still insists there is encouragement about the speed of the car – and a determination to focus on success: “The speed is there. I think we have the car. And we are confident in what is coming, we can improve. It always depends what other people are doing, but I think we have proven enough already, my point of view, from the beginning to now, we have a very strong car. We are able to improve it. So the team is working in the right direction. Now, you can talk about good luck or bad luck. I am not believing in luck in general, as a principle, but you know maybe here and there things didn’t go our way. But I’m sure what goes around comes around. What can happen to us, can happen to other people as well. I’m not wishing to anyone. But it’s part of racing. To do the season without any retirements is quite rare. To have two, three or more is not good as well. I would say we are happy with what we have, but obviously we want more. So if we’ve got pace, if we can do it, why not? We can win the next races.” – Scuderia Ferrari’s German driver concluded.
