Sebastian Vettel says “it’s pointless to post pictures” of what 2021 F1 cars will look like. Seb says .

Sebastian Vettel believes “it’s pointless to post pictures” of what 2021 F1 cars could look like and won’t let them influence his future.

Prototype images were recently released of a 2021 Formula 1 car in a wind tunnel, images which were backed by the sport’s chief technical officer Pat Symonds.

Sweeping changes are planned for the series in 2021 to make it more competitive and the October deadline to finalise the regulations is fast approaching.

Many drivers have spoken about the significance of the overhaul in their own Formula 1 futures, one of those drivers being Vettel with the Ferrari driver saying that they will play a part in whether he continues racing in the series or walks away.

However, the render images of how the cars could look in 2021 has had no effect on Vettel’s thought process.

“I think we’ve probably also seen renderings from Renault in the past and other teams so I don’t know whether the pictures we’ve seen are actually what it will be because as far as I understand there are no regulations yet for 2021,” Vettel told Crash.net.

“So it’s a bit pointless to post pictures but maybe that’s what some people would like the cars to look like. I think that there are no rules yet for 2021, no decisions, no hard decisions so it’s a bit pointless to look at pictures.”

Vettel has been very critical of Formula 1 in recent times, whether it be the level of competition, the number of races on the calendar or even how those races make it onto the calendar, but as a driver representative of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, he insists that the drivers above all else want closer racing from 2021.

“I think there’s a great chance to make things better,” he explained.

“I think we, as drivers, addressed our main points. Obviously it was very nice and very respectful that we had a sort of say or at least people asked our opinions for the first time ever in this kind of decision, the people who make the decisions asked our opinions. We were definitely pushing to keep things simple.

“We want closer racing. From our side, I think it’s very clear and then however the cars look, I guess it’s a bit secondary. I think if the racing is great and so on, then the cars will look great as well.”

Vettel’s contract at Ferrari us up at the end of 2020 and he understands that 2021 is an important opportunity to improve Formula 1 going forward.

“Obviously my contract finishes next year. Everything after that is based on the new rules so for sure you have a look,” said the four-time World Champion.

“It’s not that now everything is awful so I think we need to remember that. It’s a fine balance but every change is a chance – a chance to do better or worse and hopefully we do better.”
