In a long interview for Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was asked about his time with the Maranello team. Here are some interview excerpts with Seb:
How difficult is it for someone who has won four titles to have fifth place in the constructors’ championship as a target?
Sebastian Vettel: “If I’d had the choice I’d still be up front fighting with the leaders. But now I’m here. Last year the team had a great season, this year less so. We are here and moving forward.”
You seem to be more future-oriented…
Sebastian Vettel: “I can’t say when the results will come. 2022, with the change of regulations, will be a great opportunity for us. But I expect that the big teams will continue to play an important role.”
Thinking back to Ferrari: is there anything you would do differently from the way you did?
Sebastian Vettel: “Not really. Mistakes were made, by me and by the team. I have no regrets. Life is like that. It would be boring to think we could go back and change the things we do not like. Yes, I would have liked to have braked earlier at Hockenheim [2018], but I’ve learned more from everything after that episode than I would have if I’d won that race. If that’s how it went, it’s for a reason that will give you a chance to do better next time. Because it is from the things we don’t like that we learn. They are the things that help us to grow.”
