Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel’s season went from bad to worse at the start of the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. The four-time world champion was unable to get out of Q2 on Saturday, only managing to qualify in 12th.
It meant he had plenty of work to do off the start but disaster struck on the first corner. Making his way on the inside, Vettel ran too wide as he lost the rear before spinning out. Amazingly, the Ferrari driver was able to avoid colliding with any other driver.
Sebastian Vettel was able to make a good recovery to the midfield zone but then a pit stop which was made too early led to a difficult second half of the race for the German driver. Seb complained on the radio during the race and later explained why he was unhappy with Scuderia Ferrari’s timing of his first pits-top:
“We talked exactly about this situation, that if it happens, we don’t do what we did at the end. That was frustrating. I had enough speed to stay out. The guys that were infront of me after my pit stop were doing the exact same lap times that I did with older tyres. Maybe we did not have the courage to let it come to Charles overtaking me, although he was on a different strategy and we prefered to rather pit me to avoid that. Even with the bad first lap, we could have gained a lot of ground today.” – Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel said after finishing P12 in the second race at the Silverstone circuit.
