Mercedes confirmed on Thursday that they would bring a new spec engine to the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend, a move which is expected to only make them harder to catch as the other teams trail in their wake.
The race at Spa is seen as one of the Maranello team’s best opportunity for them to win a race this season as they chase an elusive first Grand Prix win since Kimi Raikkonen won in the USA last season. So why not bring an upgrade?
“For us, the plan is clear. We won’t have a new engine here at Spa yet. After realizing that there is a gap, it is crucial for us to draw the right conclusions. This will take a little time. In the second half of the season, it will be even more important to see that things are going in the right direction. Next year the rules will be more or less the same. We have to catch up now and take steps forward.” – Sebastian Vettel explained, ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.
Regarding the new Mercedes power unit: “I don’t know what Mercedes has in their bags. But if they have a lot of power, of course it will be hard for everyone. They are already very strong. Our weakness in the corners will hit us here too. Just like in Hungary. The question is, how much can we compensate for it on the straights. We are definitely not the favourites. We can’t be that after our performance in Hungary.” – Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel concluded.
