Sebastian Vettel confident ahead of F1 Monaco Grand Prix. Sebastian currently sits second in the standings.

Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel is not worried by the pace of the Red Bulls during Thursday practice for the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, stating that his former team always produces a strong showing in the early rounds of practice.

The Maranello team’s German driver currently sits second in the standings to reigning champion Lewis Hamilton. Following two season-opening victories, the four-time champion lost the points lead thanks to a series of small mistakes and bad luck.

“Can we be quicker than Red Bull? Why not?” said Vettel. “Always on Friday Red Bull looks a bit stronger, so let’s see if it’s the usual. I think we’ve had some Friday practice sessions where they are quick this year. I think for us, we need to look at ourselves, which is what we do and try to do our homework.” – he said.

Despite his claim that Red Bull always turns up the boost for the practice sessions, it is often the case that Scuderia Ferrari sandbags and runs on a lower engine mode. As a result, Sebastian does have reason to be optimistic for the coming weekend — even if his assessment of the situation would seem a little bit backward to most people.

“I was pretty comfortable in the car,” Vettel said. “I was happy today and I could play around even if I was sliding a lot. It is a bit more fun than other circuits. The track is very challenging and you have no room for mistakes. I was sliding a little bit too much. But as long as you know where it is going to end up and how it is going to slide, then it’s fine. I still knew I wasn’t going to touch the barriers. You have to think twice before you drop it and try everything, but I think it’s what it’s about at a street circuit. Now we need to get on top of the sliding and reduce it, then we should be in a good position.” – he explained.
