Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel will forego some of the cash owed to them to help the Maranello team get through the coronavirus crisis which has engulfed Formula 1. The Monegasque and the German driver are set to follow the lead set by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz by taking pay cuts as Formula 1 is hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Sebastian and Charles earn £35m and £8m a year respectively at Ferrari (the Monegasque driver after signing a new deal in the winter).
Talks over foregoing some of that cash are already underway as drivers across the grid carry some of the financial burden imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic to help their teams out. The loss of eight races to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent delayed start to the 2020 Formula 1 season will cost teams millions.
Measures are being taken by all 10 teams to protect as many jobs as possible going forward, with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc set to do their bit. The Daily Mail report the multiple-time world champion, who is out of contract at the end of the year, is speaking to Ferrari about taking pay cuts. The percentages involved are not clear at this stage, but a five per cent drop in earnings Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc would save the Maranello team about £1.8m.
