The FIA has cancelled the Saudi Arabia round of the 2026 World Rally Championship because of continuing uncertainty in the Middle East, placing fresh attention on Formula 1’s planned end-of-season races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
The WRC event was scheduled to take place from November 12 to 15, only a short time before Formula 1 is due to travel to Lusail. Although the 2026 Formula 1 calendar remains unchanged, the cancellation provides another indication of the logistical difficulties currently affecting international motorsport events in the region.
Why the FIA cancelled WRC Saudi Arabia in 2026
The FIA and the WRC Promoter confirmed that the Saudi Arabia Rally would no longer form part of the 2026 World Rally Championship. Persistent regional uncertainty was cited as the factor preventing the organisers from completing the necessary logistical planning for the event.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem explained that the governing body had spent several months working with the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation, the WRC Promoter and other championship stakeholders to assess every possible way of allowing the rally to proceed as scheduled.
However, Ben Sulayem acknowledged that ongoing developments across the region ultimately meant the WRC element of the Saudi Arabia Rally could not take place in 2026. He also emphasised that the decision had been difficult because of the considerable preparation already completed by the organisers and their partners.
The Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation and the event’s organising team had worked alongside the FIA in an attempt to deliver a safe and successful rally. The cancellation applies specifically to the WRC round, with the Middle East Rally Championship event in Saudi Arabia still scheduled to go ahead.
Sardinia becomes the final round of the 2026 WRC season
Saudi Arabia had been due to stage the final event of the WRC campaign. Its removal means that the championship will instead conclude in Sardinia, where the rally is scheduled to run from October 1 to 4.
The Italian event will now become the 13th and final round of the 2026 WRC season. As a result, the championship will finish more than a month earlier than originally planned.
What the Saudi Arabia cancellation could mean for Formula 1
Formula 1 is still scheduled to conclude its 2026 championship with races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Those Grands Prix are due to take place only around two weeks after the cancelled WRC event in Saudi Arabia, creating further uncertainty over how the final part of the F1 season will be managed.
No alteration to the Formula 1 schedule has been confirmed. Nevertheless, the FIA’s handling of the rally demonstrates that regional conditions are already affecting the calendars of major world championships governed by the organisation.
The logistical demands of Formula 1 differ from those of the WRC, meaning the Saudi Arabia decision does not automatically determine what will happen at Lusail or Yas Marina. For now, Qatar and Abu Dhabi retain their places as the final two rounds of the championship.
Imola remains a possible alternative for the F1 season finale
The situation has increased the possibility of Imola returning to the Formula 1 calendar after hosting its previous Grand Prix in 2025. The Italian venue could provide an alternative if the championship is ultimately unable to stage its planned Middle Eastern finale.
Any return would require a formal calendar decision, and the FIA has not confirmed that either Qatar or Abu Dhabi will be cancelled or replaced. Until such an announcement is made, the two Middle Eastern Grands Prix remain the scheduled conclusion to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
