The excitement surrounding Ferrari in 2025 is at an all-time high, with Lewis Hamilton aiming to secure a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 World Championship in his debut season with the Scuderia.
During pre-season testing at the 5.412-kilometre Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, the British driver logged an impressive 70 laps in the SF-25 on the opening day. However, his initial performance left some in the paddock underwhelmed, as he only managed the fifth-fastest lap time. Despite this, the Briton was likely focused on system checks and acclimating to his new machine before committing to a structured run plan. Notably, Ferrari opted for an extensive allocation of the C3 compound, suggesting a strategic approach to their early testing program.
The SF-25 represents a refined evolution of Ferrari’s 2024 challenger, a car that secured five race wins with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Determined to challenge Red Bull and McLaren, Ferrari has introduced several upgrades, including a key technical innovation that has drawn significant attention within the paddock.
Ferrari’s Sidepods Spark Widespread Discussion in the F1 Paddock
One of the most talked-about changes on the SF-25 is Ferrari’s revised front suspension, a modification expected to enhance Lewis Hamilton’s ability to extract performance from the car. However, another major upgrade involves Ferrari’s cooling package, an area F1 technical analyst Sam Collins has highlighted as a hot topic within the paddock.
Speaking on F1 TV, Sam Collins noted that this particular design tweak has generated significant buzz among teams and experts alike. With Ferrari leaving no stone unturned in their bid for championship contention, these refinements could prove decisive in their battle against the dominant forces of Red Bull and McLaren.
Sam Collins remarked that Ferrari’s sidepod design had become a major talking point in the paddock, describing it as highly influential. He noted that, unlike Red Bull, Ferrari had not chosen to split the two ducts. However, the design still featured a similar ‘P’ shape along with an upper element, often referred to as an overbite system. The F1 expert speculated that this adjustment had likely altered the cooling layout within the sidepods, though he acknowledged that a full assessment would only be possible once the bodywork was removed.
Potential Ferrari Challenge for Lewis Hamilton in High-Speed Corners
During the opening day of pre-season testing, Lewis Hamilton completed a total of 70 laps in the SF-25, which equates to approximately 120% of the total race distance for the 57-lap Bahrain Grand Prix. Only three other drivers managed more laps than Hamilton, with rookies Andrea Kimi Antonelli (78 laps) and Oliver Bearman (72 laps) outpacing him slightly.
It’s evident that the British driver is striving to maximize his track time, likely in an effort to familiarize himself with the intricacies of the Ferrari, a car that is new to him this season. Given his transition from Mercedes to Ferrari, every additional lap provides invaluable data to adapt to the new machine.
However, not all signs are entirely positive, as former F1 strategist Bernie Collins highlighted a potential issue for Hamilton in high-speed corners. By comparing Hamilton’s laps to those of Fernando Alonso, Sam Collins pointed out that Ferrari seemed to lag behind Aston Martin in these critical sections of the track. This discrepancy could pose a challenge for Hamilton as he seeks to extract the maximum performance from the SF-25, especially in circuits where high-speed cornering is crucial.
