Does the extreme and unconventional Ferrari F1-75 really have a hidden weapon? Here is Ross Brawn’s opinion.
With the revolution of the technical regulations for the 2022 Formula 1 season, one of the major concerns which tormented the FIA was certainly the possibility that some teams could design their cars by identifying aerodynamic solution which could be in the gray areas of the regulation, putting the guidelines set for the 2022 season in difficulty.
This, according to Ross Brawn, did not happen, somehow avoiding the possibility of a similar scenario to the one from 2009: back then there was a team capable of building a brilliant car and at the limits of regulation and it was precisely the Brawn GP Formula 1 team, led by the old Ross, which able to win both the drivers ‘and constructors’ titles.
According to the former Ferrari engineer, among the cars that took to the track in the pre-season testing session at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Scuderia Ferrari’s F1-75 car was the most extreme one (especially regarding the sidepods), but that, according to Ross Brawn, would not be enough to create such an important gap to the competition.
“We have done our best using all our knowledge and beliefs to avoid having gaps in the regulations.” – These are the comments of Ross Brawn in a recent interview for F1 TV, after being asked about the cars presented in Montmelò – “We have always kept in mind that perhaps someone could have found the ‘philosopher’s stone’. However, a team would have every interest in revealing a potentially winning solution as late as possible, so as to give opponents less time to copy it.” – the British Formula One managing director explained.

“However, I do not expect such a scenario, as we have drawn up a series of regulations that are clear and solid. In Spain, nothing made me think of something that could undermine the basic philosophy of these cars, but our technicians will remain vigilant and, in case we get the impression that the development of a single-seater is going in a direction that does not convinces us, we will be ready to intervene” – this was the veiled warning that the general manager of Formula 1 wanted to make ahead of the second pre-season testing session which takes place this week.

“Overtaking? Drivers have already noticed that it is now easier to follow an opponent closely.” – he continued. As for which car surprised him the most, Ross Brawn undoubtedly points to the F1-75: “Ferrari has chosen a very extreme way for the sidepods, but also in the underbody there are very ingenious solutions. However, the technicians of all the teams had a brilliant approach to the new regulation.” – he concluded.
