Robin Raikkonen could be moving another step closer to the Formula 1 development ladder, with Gino Rosato confirming that several options are being evaluated for the son of 2007 F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen. Rosato, Robin’s godfather and a recent returnee to Formula 1 as a Red Bull consultant, hopes there could be significant news regarding the youngster’s future before the end of the year.
The prospect immediately raises an intriguing question: could Formula 1 eventually see Andrea Kimi Antonelli racing against Robin Raikkonen? It may sound far-fetched today, but in little more than five years such a scenario may no longer seem so remote if the younger Raikkonen continues progressing through the karting ranks.
Robin Raikkonen could take first step towards an F1 junior programme
The Raikkonen name still carries enormous weight in Formula 1. Kimi Raikkonen remains one of the most recognisable drivers of his generation, with his legacy including Ferrari’s unforgettable 2007 Formula 1 world championship victory. His influence is even reflected in the name of current championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Although Kimi Raikkonen had previously played down the idea of his son following him into Formula 1, the possibility of the Raikkonen surname eventually returning to the championship cannot be ruled out. Robin appears completely comfortable behind a steering wheel, whether he is driving a kart or competing virtually. Karting has also long been part of family life for the former Ferrari driver, as Kimi Raikkonen has previously discussed while speaking about spending time and training with his children.
Gino Rosato confirms options are being evaluated for Robin Raikkonen
Gino Rosato is particularly close to the situation. The Italian-Canadian is Robin Raikkonen’s godfather and has recently returned to Formula 1 as a Red Bull consultant. Speaking to Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, Rosato hinted that work is already taking place behind the scenes to assess the youngster’s next steps.
“We are evaluating some options. I hope that by the end of the year we can give some big news in this regard,” Gino Rosato explained when asked about potential negotiations surrounding a junior programme.
Rosato also offered a concise assessment of Robin Raikkonen’s characteristics behind the wheel.
“Robin is very calm, very quiet. And very fast,” Rosato added.
Could Robin Raikkonen follow Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s route?
The comparison with Andrea Kimi Antonelli is particularly relevant because of another recent move involving Red Bull. The team has recruited Gwen Lagrue from Mercedes, where he played a central role in Antonelli’s development and helped guide the Italian through the junior categories on his way to Formula 1.
Antonelli’s accelerated path through the development ladder demonstrated how quickly an exceptional young prospect can progress when supported by a major F1 organisation. His rise ultimately took him into a Mercedes race seat at a remarkably young age, with Toto Wolff previously discussing the challenge of developing and supporting Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Formula 1.
With Lagrue now moving to Red Bull and Rosato involved with the team as a consultant, the obvious question is whether Robin Raikkonen could eventually become another young driver to benefit from that expertise. For now, no specific programme has been confirmed, and Rosato has only indicated that different possibilities are under consideration.
What is clear is that Robin Raikkonen’s progress is attracting attention. If those discussions lead to a place within an F1 junior structure, the possibility of seeing the Raikkonen name return to Formula 1 could begin to look considerably more realistic.
