Ferrari arrives in Monaco with victory firmly in its sights
The Monaco Grand Prix could represent one of Ferrari’s most significant opportunities of the 2026 Formula 1 season. After showing encouraging pace throughout the opening rounds, the Scuderia now arrives at a circuit that appears perfectly suited to the strengths of the SF-26.
Unlike power-sensitive tracks where outright engine performance often determines the competitive order, Monaco places a premium on mechanical grip, low-speed balance, traction and driver confidence. These are precisely the areas where Ferrari has consistently impressed this season.
As a result, many observers believe the Maranello team enters the weekend with a genuine chance of securing its first victory of the campaign. Yet while Ferrari may be viewed as the team to beat, the spotlight is increasingly focused on an intriguing internal battle between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Why Monaco could play directly into Ferrari’s hands
Veteran Formula 1 journalist Roberto Chinchero believes Ferrari has strong reasons to approach the Monaco weekend with confidence. Looking at the performance trends from the opening part of the season, he sees clear evidence that the SF-26 possesses characteristics that should translate exceptionally well to the streets of Monte Carlo.
According to Chinchero, Ferrari has repeatedly demonstrated superior performance in slow-speed corners, an area that has become one of the defining strengths of the car. Monaco, more than almost any other circuit on the calendar, rewards exactly those qualities.
The lack of long straights significantly reduces the importance of Ferrari’s main weakness, namely its power unit deficit compared to Mercedes. Instead, the focus shifts toward chassis efficiency, cornering performance and driver precision.
That combination could create the ideal conditions for Ferrari to maximize its potential and place both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton firmly in the fight for pole position and victory.
Charles Leclerc remains the benchmark around Monte Carlo
Even within a highly competitive Ferrari lineup, Charles Leclerc continues to be regarded as the driver most likely to deliver on the streets of Monaco.
Despite experiencing occasional qualifying inconsistencies during the 2026 season, the Monegasque driver has repeatedly shown an extraordinary ability to extract performance around his home circuit. His understanding of Monaco’s unique demands, combined with the confidence that comes from racing on familiar streets, gives him a significant advantage.
Chinchero believes that Ferrari starts the weekend as a slight favorite ahead of rivals McLaren, although he expects the margins at the front to remain extremely close.
The combination of Ferrari’s competitive low-speed package and Charles Leclerc’s proven Monaco pedigree has led many within the paddock to view the home favorite as the leading candidate for victory.
Lewis Hamilton is becoming an increasingly serious threat
While Charles Leclerc may still hold the upper hand, Lewis Hamilton’s recent performances have changed the internal dynamic at Ferrari.
The seven-time world champion delivered one of his strongest weekends since joining the Scuderia during the Canadian Grand Prix, where he demonstrated impressive pace, confidence and consistency throughout the event. That performance reinforced the growing belief that Lewis Hamilton is becoming increasingly comfortable with Ferrari’s operating methods and the characteristics of the SF-26.
For much of the season, Charles Leclerc appeared to have a clear advantage within the team. However, Lewis Hamilton’s progress has significantly narrowed that gap, creating the possibility of a much more balanced contest between the two drivers.
According to Chinchero, Monaco still favors Charles Leclerc due to a combination of driving style, experience around the circuit and the additional motivation that comes from racing in front of his home crowd. Nevertheless, Lewis Hamilton’s recent improvement means the outcome is far less predictable than it might have appeared only a few races ago.
An internal Ferrari battle could define the weekend
Perhaps the most fascinating storyline entering the Monaco Grand Prix is not whether Ferrari can fight for victory, but which Ferrari driver will emerge on top.
Charles Leclerc remains the favorite on paper. His history around Monaco, combined with Ferrari’s apparent suitability to the circuit, places him in an excellent position heading into the weekend.
At the same time, Lewis Hamilton arrives carrying momentum, confidence and the determination to continue proving that his adaptation to Ferrari is accelerating. The British driver knows that matching or beating Charles Leclerc at Monaco would send one of the strongest statements possible to the rest of the paddock.
With Ferrari expected to be among the fastest teams, qualifying could become decisive. In Monaco, track position often determines the outcome of the race, meaning the duel between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton on Saturday may ultimately prove more important than anything that happens on Sunday.
Ferrari appears ready to fight for victory. The only question is whether that triumph will belong to Charles Leclerc, the hometown hero, or Lewis Hamilton, the champion rapidly building momentum in red.
