Could finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship be enough to revive Ferrari’s 2025 Formula 1 season? That is the question addressed by Roberto Chinchero. The Las Vegas Grand Prix, the third-to-last round of the year, is fast approaching. On Friday night the drivers will take to the track to prepare for Sunday’s race, where crucial points are at stake both for the fight over second place in the Constructors’ standings and for the Drivers’ title battle. It is a tight contest on both fronts, with Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari battling for second position in the 2025 F1 championship, while Lando Norris has the chance to extend his lead and potentially extinguish any remaining hopes for Max Verstappen.
Ferrari, however, heads into the Las Vegas weekend after a turbulent week marked by comments from president John Elkann. In his regular “questions and answers” video on Motorsport.com, Roberto Chinchero offered a broader overview of Ferrari’s season.
The team’s excellence
In the Motorsport.com video published on YouTube, Formula 1 expert Roberto Chinchero stated: “The trackside team has done a great job, they haven’t left much on the table, in fact they have been the best in terms of pit stops. This year I haven’t seen major issues on the strategy front, quite the opposite.”
The Scuderia’s real problem
For Roberto Chinchero, however, the reason Ferrari has yet to win a single race this season is very clear. He did not mince his words: “The fact remains that the reason Ferrari hasn’t won a Grand Prix yet—and we don’t know if they will win one between now and the end of the year, although it is unlikely, not impossible but unlikely—is that the car is not competitive. That is the main problem. Once this issue is fixed, other weaknesses may emerge, but there is no point in beating around the bush.”
Although John Elkann’s comments seemed directed at the drivers—and Mazzola expressed a similar interpretation—Chinchero does not believe the root of the problem lies with the Maranello driver line-up. According to the journalist, pointing fingers at Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton makes little sense: “Talking about the drivers this season seems pointless to me because yes, a few more points might have come from Hamilton, certainly a few more podiums, and Ferrari would probably be second in the Constructors’ standings with a slightly stronger score. But would that change the overall judgement of Ferrari’s 2025 season? From my point of view, no.”
