During the Sky Sport Formula 1 program Race Anatomy, renowned Italian journalist Umberto Zapelloni made a bold and intriguing statement about the future of three-time World Champion Max Verstappen, linking him directly to Scuderia Ferrari.
Umberto Zapelloni’s comments
The Italian journalist expressed his personal view on Max Verstappen’s potential career trajectory: “Max Verstappen to Mercedes? In my opinion, there is only a 20 percent chance of that happening,” Zapelloni explained, implying that the reigning Formula 1 World Champion is unlikely to switch to the Silver Arrows in the near future.
He then elaborated further, stating: “In 2026, I believe Max Verstappen will remain at Oracle Red Bull Racing. But after that, he could join Scuderia Ferrari as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton. At least Ferrari would be signing a much younger driver—though I must admit, this is my personal wish rather than a confirmed plan.”
Despite being presented as a personal hope, Zapelloni’s suggestion quickly sparked widespread interest and debate. The idea of Max Verstappen—currently seen as the dominant force in Formula 1—making a sensational switch to Ferrari is certainly compelling. Yet it raises several critical questions about the future of both drivers and teams.
While it is true that Ferrari remains a dream destination for many Formula 1 drivers—perhaps even for most of them—one must ask whether Max Verstappen would truly consider joining the Maranello-based team if the Ferrari car is not competitive enough to fight for the World Championship title. Given his relentless drive for victory and current position at the top of the sport, such a move would seem unlikely unless the conditions were ideal.
On the other hand, should Ferrari manage to produce a genuinely competitive car in the coming seasons, would Lewis Hamilton be willing to step aside and give up his seat to one of his fiercest rivals? Or would the seven-time World Champion continue racing, unfazed by his advancing age and determined to pursue further success?
There is, however, a scenario that could satisfy all parties involved. If Sir Lewis Hamilton were to retire from Formula 1 after achieving a historic eighth World Championship title, Max Verstappen could then inherit a title-winning car and take on the challenge of continuing Ferrari’s resurgence.
This potential development in the Formula 1 driver market—often referred to as “silly season” or, in Italian, fantamercato—has certainly ignited the imagination of fans and pundits alike. But what do you think? Does this scenario seem plausible, or is it simply a dream too far-fetched to ever materialize?
