Red Bull questions FIA over Ferrari engine. Rival top teams are dubious about the performance of Ferrari’s 2019 engine.

Mattia Binotto (Ferrari), Toto Wolf (Mercedes), Christian Horner (Red Bull)

Rival top teams are dubious about the performance of Scuderia Ferrari’s 2019 engine. At Spa and Monza, where Charles Leclerc secured his first two victories back-to-back, the superiority of the Maranello-made power unit was clearer than ever.

“Right now, Renault, Honda and ourselves are at about the same level,” Mercedes’ Toto Wolff told Auto Motor und Sport – “Only Ferrari stands out, and in a pretty serious way.” – the Mercedes boss added.

There are various theories floating around in the paddock. One suggests that the Maranello team is generating more than the allowed kilowattage from the battery. Another is that the engine is managing to store and then use extra fuel at certain moments between the mandatory sensors, while a third rumour is that the engine is burning extra oil for a power benefit. An unnamed rival team member said: “They must have come up with something very clever. If it turns out to be legal, all we could do is take off our hats.”

Howver, Christian Horner, the Team Principal of the Red Bull Racing Formula One team, confirmed that Red Bull questioned FIA over the Ferrari: “We sent a number of questions to the FIA, but have not received any answers.” – Christian Horner admitted, ahead of the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix, where Ferrari’s power unit superiority unfortunately will not be too helpful for the Italian side.

Be it as it may. All is based on fuel consumption and weight. If they are able to carry 2-3L of xtra oil to burn for power while saving the same amount of weight somewhere else then why not do it??? Even better if they managed to get the battery power to produce more then allowed they are on to somethimg that cannot be measured, except if it is done “live” during a race. Either or what has been a abysmal year for ferrari up until now, it has set them up very nicely for 2020 if they can sort out their chassis issues before the end of the year. No need to chase championship now. Just lock in as many effective laps and points as possible
