Many corners, few straights. This is the combination that the Ferrari SF21 car loves the most, as the Maranello team dominated the second free practice session for the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
Red Bull’s Helmut Marko admits that Charles Leclerc’s best time would have been out of reach for Max Verstappen today: “Ferrari always run on less fuel on Friday. And in the longrun we are stronger.” – he explained.
Christian Horner: “Ferrari can be dangerous for us here. We’ve known since Monte Carlo how good they can be on this type of circuit.”
According to German automobile magazine Auto Motor und Sport, Scuderia Ferrari still has to find more pace in the longrun. Carlos Sainz was only in the midfield during his longrun on softs, while direct rivals like McLaren, Alpine and Alpha Tauri were faster than him. Same applies to Charles Leclerc’s longrun on medium Pirelli tyres.
Red Bull is still searching a bit for more balance. Too much understeer in Turn 9 and 11, some oversteer in other corners. Helmut Marko: “But we were between two and four tenths ahead of the others in the longrun. Perez is also doing well there.”
Bottas lost an average of three tenths to Verstappen in the longrun. Helmut Marko: “Look at what’s going on in the stands and in the city. The fans expect Max to get pole. Anything else would be a disappointment for them & Max is under pressure to deliver.”
