Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc took pole in a dramatic and crash-filled qualifying for the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as his team-mate Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda both crashed out within seconds of one another at the same corner in Q3.
After the impressive pace shown in Monte Carlo two weeks ago, not many peope expected the Maranello team to be able to once again challenge Mercedes and Red Bull, this time at the Baku City Circuit, where straight line speed is much more important, yet Scuderia Ferrari managed to find the right compromise and once again proved capable of fighting with Mercedes and Red Bull.
According to German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’, Ferrari is still missing around 20hp on Mercedes. That is the reason why they had to use a small rear wing in order not to be vulnerable on the straights. The Maranello team is among the fastest on the finishing straight, despite that they don’t lose any time in the corners.
Red Bull Engineers: “Ferrari is the benchmark in the 90-degree corners.”
Especially in the second part of the track with eleven corners, Ferrari play out their advantage. But they are also there in the other two sections of the Baku City Circuit.
