The Formula 1 calendar for 2024 is gearing up for an electrifying spectacle at the Miami International Autodrome with the introduction of Sprint qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix. Scheduled for Sunday, May 5, the main race will unfold over 57 laps of this cutting-edge circuit, promising a thrilling weekend of motorsport action in Florida, USA.
The Miami International Autodrome, a remarkable blend of precision engineering and high-speed thrills, stands as a testament to Formula 1’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the United States. This track, designed specifically for the Miami Grand Prix, intricately weaves through the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens, offering a unique blend of tight corners and long straights that challenge the drivers and delight the fans. Its layout is designed to promote overtaking and close racing, making every lap an exciting spectacle.
For the first time, the Miami race weekend will adopt the Sprint format, a decision that has injected an additional layer of excitement and strategy into the event. The Sprint qualifying format, introduced in 2021, has quickly become a fan favorite for its ability to deliver intense, action-packed racing over a shorter distance. This format sees drivers compete in a 100km race on Saturday. This not only offers more racing action for fans over the weekend but also adds a strategic element for the teams and drivers, as they balance the pursuit of a favorable grid position with the need to preserve their cars and tires for the Grand Prix.
