A season start far from expectations and a seemingly unreachable feeling with the car. According to Ralf Schumacher, the newcomer to Maranello, Lewis Hamilton, might consider leaving Ferrari as early as the end of this Formula 1 season.
“A huge project that is currently far from expectations,” is how Ralf Schumacher described Sir Lewis’s adventure at Maranello in these early stages of 2025. The British champion seems to have entered a tunnel with no clear exit in sight. Arriving in Emilia-Romagna welcomed by thousands of fans, the 40-year-old from Stevenage certainly did not expect such a gloomy start to the championship.
After five rounds, Sir Lewis has scored just 31 points, often showing a weak or non-existent connection with the SF-25. His only highlight, the Sprint in Shanghai, is not enough to lift the spirits of a driver who appears “flat” even in his statements to the media.
This situation, unless there is a major shift, could soon become unsustainable for the former Mercedes champion. According to Ralf Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton “is completely lost, he just can’t handle the car.”
The former German driver observes Sir Lewis’s behavior and does not draw any particularly positive conclusions. For the ex-F1 driver, the seven-time world champion seems “stuck, out of resources, and increasingly slow”: Ralf Schumacher, analyzing Hamilton’s situation, says he can relate, recalling the darkest period of his own career.
Ralf Schumacher warns: Lewis Hamilton could walk away from Ferrari
“I know from personal experience, quitting is something you start to consider,” Schumacher explained on Sky’s podcast “Backstage Pit Lane.” The German fears Hamilton might contemplate leaving Ferrari and F1 altogether if he cannot resolve the issues before the summer break. “In that case, I see the risk that he might say: ‘I don’t want this anymore, I want to live my life. I’m 40 years old and I’m rich, I don’t need to do this anymore.’”
“If this situation doesn’t improve, obviously Lewis Hamilton won’t be happy. At some point, you wake up in the morning and think: ‘God, why am I doing this to myself? I’m not enjoying it anymore, I can’t do it anymore, and I’m just becoming a burden to my team.’” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
