Ralf Schumacher warns Ferrari over critical Lewis Hamilton error amid struggling 2025 season
Ferrari are reaching a crucial juncture in their relationship with Lewis Hamilton after a challenging and underwhelming 2025 Formula 1 campaign. Expectations were sky-high for Hamilton in his first season with the Scuderia, as many believed that pairing the seven-time world champion with Charles Leclerc could guide Ferrari back to championship contention for the first time in nearly two decades.
However, the season has failed to meet those expectations. Ferrari have yet to secure a Grand Prix victory, and questions have arisen regarding Leclerc’s commitment and the team’s overall performance. While the Monegasque driver appears set to remain with the team, Hamilton is at a stage in his career where he cannot afford to wait indefinitely for Ferrari to resolve its performance issues.
Hamilton’s current contract runs through the end of the 2026 season, with the option for a one-year extension. If results do not improve, the seven-time champion could reconsider his future at Maranello. Notably, Hamilton is on track to become only the fifth Ferrari driver since 1980 to finish a season without a podium, highlighting the severity of the team’s struggles.
Ralf Schumacher flags Ferrari’s critical mistake with Hamilton
Ralf Schumacher has cautioned Ferrari that they cannot repeat errors like those seen at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. In Baku, the Briton was fastest in FP2 but failed to reach the top 10 shootout in qualifying and eventually finished eighth in the race. The German former F1 driver emphasized that Ferrari ignored Hamilton’s tyre requests during qualifying, a decision that could have cost the team a better starting position.
Schumacher explained that an experienced driver like Hamilton, who provides detailed reports and contributes to car development, should be fully trusted to make real-time tyre decisions. He noted that at Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton’s requests were never questioned; engineers acted promptly to implement his recommendations, whether it involved tyre changes or adjustments to the car setup. Ferrari, however, appeared slower to respond, creating friction and undermining the driver’s confidence.
According to Schumacher, Hamilton’s interactions with the Ferrari team started positively on Friday practice sessions but quickly became critical when the driver felt his input was disregarded. This pattern, Schumacher warned, could damage team harmony if not addressed. He stressed that Ferrari must resolve internal communication and trust issues to prevent unnecessary tension, especially when the car has shown strong potential during practice sessions.
Hamilton’s radio communications highlight ongoing adaptation issues
Another recurring concern has been Hamilton’s radio communications with race engineer Riccardo Adami. Having spent over a decade working closely with Peter Bonnington at Mercedes, the Briton is adjusting to a new communication style at Ferrari. Observers, including Juan Pablo Montoya, have noted that some of Hamilton’s radio messages in Baku suggested the team treated him more like a student than a seven-time world champion, raising concerns about how seriously his input is being taken.
While Ferrari possesses far more telemetry and data than Lewis Hamilton can process from the cockpit, streamlining communication between the driver and engineers is essential. Ensuring that Hamilton’s expertise is fully leveraged could not only improve race outcomes but also help maintain a strong working relationship within the team. As Ferrari navigates the remainder of the 2025 season, addressing these operational and communication challenges will be vital for both Hamilton’s performance and the team’s long-term success.
