Lewis Hamilton is “light years” away from Michael Schumacher, according to his brother Ralf, but Max Verstappen could bring himself closer in Formula 1. This opinion sparks debate and reflection, especially when looking at the pure achievements of both drivers: the Englishman is, in fact, the most successful driver in history, tying the number of World Championships won by the German. But is that enough to equal the legacies of the two?
The debate over the “greatest of all time” animates every sport. Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Michael Jordan or LeBron James? A definitive answer is practically impossible, regardless of the competition in question. Different eras, sometimes, or different contexts, or even different career choices have led to varying outcomes and successes.
Formula 1 is no different: Michael Schumacher remains the undisputed king of the discipline in the hearts of many Formula 1 fans, although there are occasional rivalries with Ayrton Senna. For Ferrari fans, it’s more difficult to accept discussions with Lewis Hamilton: also a seven-time World Champion, he faces criticism regarding the supposed superiority of Mercedes during their long years of dominance.
Ralf Schumacher reiterated this view while speaking to Formula1.de: “Even Lewis Hamilton will never come close to Michael: he is light years away, in my opinion. We thought the Englishman could walk on water, but he can’t.” – the former Formula 1 driver believes.
However, the German does open the door to the possibility of Max Verstappen being “closer” to his brother’s legacy: “We thought Max Verstappen could also walk on water, and in my opinion, in terms of talent, he could go further than Lewis. That’s the way it is.” – Ralf Schumacher concluded.
