Ralf Schumacher has described Ferrari’s Hungarian Grand Prix performance as a “huge disappointment” after a weekend that began with genuine hopes of victory ended with Charles Leclerc fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth at the Hungaroring.
Ferrari appeared capable of challenging for the win following its encouraging pace in practice and qualifying. However, lost positions, questionable strategic decisions and another penalty for Lewis Hamilton turned one of the Scuderia’s most promising weekends of the 2026 Formula 1 season into a major missed opportunity.
Ferrari lets Hungarian GP victory opportunity slip away
Judging by Ferrari’s initial performance at the Hungaroring, the Maranello team appeared to have an excellent chance of entering the summer break with a victory. The first major indication came in qualifying, when Lewis Hamilton missed pole position by only 0.012 seconds.
The seven-time world champion was subsequently handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri. Despite that sanction, Ferrari retained a place on the front row through Charles Leclerc, who effectively replaced his teammate alongside the polesitter.
The race then developed into a self-inflicted defeat for both drivers and the team. Ferrari lost positions, made strategic choices that proved costly and saw Lewis Hamilton receive another penalty, this time for speeding in the pit lane. The five-second sanction was imposed after the British driver exceeded the limit by just 0.1 km/h, with the full circumstances detailed in the FIA decisions involving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Ferrari ultimately left the Hungaroring without a podium, as Charles Leclerc finished fourth and Lewis Hamilton was classified fifth. The complete order can be found in the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix results.
Ralf Schumacher delivers blunt Ferrari Hungarian GP verdict
The outcome represented a major failure for the Prancing Horse at a circuit where the team had been considered one of the leading contenders for victory. Ralf Schumacher, whose brother Michael Schumacher won four times at the Hungaroring during his Formula 1 career, offered an uncompromising assessment of Ferrari’s overall performance.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Formula 1 driver expressed particular frustration that Ferrari had been unable to convert its strong Friday pace into a successful race result.
“It was a huge disappointment. On Friday they were half a second faster than the rest of the field, yet they were unable to maintain or extend that advantage. They were overtaking everyone left, right and centre. On top of that, they brought Lewis into the pits at the wrong moment, causing him to lose the position again. A real shame, but I think you’ll be reading about it in Italy,” Ralf Schumacher explained.
Strategy and penalties leave Ferrari outside the podium
The timing of Lewis Hamilton’s pit stop was one of several decisions that attracted attention after the race. Ferrari later acknowledged that its intended tyre plan had not produced the expected outcome, with the team’s Hungarian Grand Prix tyre strategy contributing to the missed opportunity.
For Ralf Schumacher, the most disappointing aspect was the contrast between Ferrari’s early advantage and its final result. The Italian team had shown enough speed to place both cars near the front in qualifying, but it could not maintain or increase that advantage when it mattered most.
Instead of travelling into the summer break with a victory or podium finish, Ferrari was left with fourth and fifth positions from a weekend that had initially promised much more. The result underlined how execution, strategy and penalties prevented the Scuderia from converting competitive pace into the outcome many had expected at the Hungaroring.
