Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz started the 2022 British Grand Prix from pole position and despite not showing the best race pace, he took advantage of a late safety car to overtake his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc and took his first Formula 1 race win. Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez recovered to second, also helped by the safety car moment, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium, ahead of the other Ferrari car of Charles Leclerc who lost out on the final laps.
Spanish professional tennis player Rafael Nadal, who is currently taking part in in the Wimbledon Championships, took to his Instagram handle to acknowledge the 27-year-old’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix win.
“Enhorabuena Por Tu Primera Gran Victoria!” Rafael Nadal wrote, which translates to congratulations on your first big win!
Given the fact that Max Verstappen was not able to fight for the podium places at the Silverstone circuit due to floor damage, the British Grand Prix turned into a three-way battle between the Scuderia Ferrari drivers and Lewis Hamilton, as the Mercedes driver led a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time in the current championship after Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc made their pitstops for hard tyres.
The win looked likely for Charles Leclerc, as Lewis Hamilton found himself hunting the Ferrari drivers with fresher tyres, but the Monegasque driver had a pace that would have allowed him to defend the lead. When it became clear that Charles Leclerc had a better pace than his Maranello teammate, Ferrari reversed their cars to allow the Monegasque driver to run in clean air. However, Silverstone would serve a final turning point with 13 laps to go as the Alpine car of Esteban Ocon stopped on the main stright due to a fuel pump problem, a moment that led to the safety car being called.
Scuderia Ferrari made the decision to divide their strategy: Charles Leclerc continued on track with the old tyres, while Carlos Sainz was called in, just like Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez, for a new set of softs. This meant that after the race restart, Carlos Sainz was able to capitalize on the faster tires to take the lead from his Maranello teammate on the Wellington Strait and went on to secure a breakthrough victory in the most entertaining on-track race of the 2022 Formula 1 championship.
