A pole position at the Silverstone circuit is always a good way to set up a race. Carlos Sainz had a great lap after struggling more than Charles Leclerc to find the pace that would put him in competition with Max Verstappen. His first career pole position, the first pole at Silverstone for Scuderia Ferrari since the distant 2012 Formula 1 season, when another Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso, secured pole for the Italian side.
After the third free practice session, a source revealed to formu1a.uno that the cars were not only set at low power to preserve the degradation of the power units, hence the five tenths lost on the straight to Red Bull which were then reset in qualifying, but also that engineers and drivers had opted for a heavier front setup, to make up for the understeer suffered on Friday, and slightly softer, certainly accepting the bouncing on the soft in dry conditions, especially in fast corners like the Copse.
Beyond the unpredictable conditions in the wet, that in any case helped to mitigate the annoying bouncing in the fast corners which was clearly visibile on a dry track in the third free practice session on the F1-75, the goal the Maranello team worked on was to have a good car in terms of race pace with the Hards and Mediums, albeit not particularly loaded but yes efficient. The C1 tyres in particular offer an important stiffness on a Silverstone track that stresses the cars’ sideways in an extreme way. Loss of stiffness was a factor that could affect a dry qualifying, however the Maranello engineers were quite confident that they had hit the target.

Basically, in this wet qualifying we saw a fluctuating performance trend. This situation was conditioned by moments in which, especially as the track dried up or in the very first laps launched, on the one hand the Red Bull RB18 appeared clearly superior through the better triggering of the intermediate tires, on the other the Ferrari that re-emerged in the final part thanks to the gentler balance – once the compound has been brought into the ideal working window, which the Ferrari F1-75 does more slowly than the RB18.
