The track limits chaos that we saw in Austria has partially repeated itself in Qatar: at Losail, only one driver didn’t receive track limits warnings.
The Qatar Grand Prix, as anticipated from the earlier sessions, was a source of penalties due to severe track limits violations.
Ten penalties were handed out by the race stewards to the drivers in the circus. Four drivers fell victim to the strict track limits: Sergio Perez and Pierre Gasly received three penalties each, while Lance Stroll and Alexander Albon received “only” two.
Among the drivers who participated in the Grand Prix, excluding Carlos Sainz, only two managed to stay within the circuit limits. Excluding Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton, the only driver not flagged for track limits was Max Verstappen himself. The three-time world champion started from pole, led the race, and won the Grand Prix in his Red Bull.
Sergio Perez, driving a Red Bull twin of Max’s, wasn’t exactly impeccable in terms of track limit compliance. Six laps invalidated out of 57 for the Mexican, resulting in three penalties. Only Pierre Gasly did worse, with seven invalidated laps and an equal number of penalties.
In Qatar, 51 laps were cancelled for track limit violations. While this is a substantial number on the FIA’s list, it doesn’t come close to, and of course doesn’t exceed, the astonishing 83 invalidated laps reached during the Austrian Grand Prix.
Number of laps cancelled for track limits:
– Pierre Gasly, 7 laps, 3 penalties.
– Sergio Perez, 6 laps, 3 penalties.
– Lance Stroll and Alex Albon, 5 laps, 2 penalties.
– Russell, Piastri, Alonso, Lawson, Bottas, Sargeant: 3 laps.
– Norris, Zhou, Hulkenberg, 2 laps.
– Leclerc, Tsunoda, Magnussen, Ocon, 1 lap.
– Verstappen, no laps cancelled.
