McLaren driver Oscar Piastri bounced back in style by clinching pole position for the Qatar Sprint race.

The Australian driver had endured a challenging run since his last triumph at the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, leaving him 24 points behind team-mate Lando Norris heading into the Lusail weekend.

However, Oscar Piastri looked in total control at the Lusail International Circuit, delivering an impressive lap of 1:20.055. The Australian edged out Mercedes’ George Russell by just 0.032 seconds, Lando while Norris could only manage third, 0.230 seconds off the pace.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen, also 24 points adrift of Norris, struggled in qualifying, ending up sixth on the grid. A mistake on his initial soft-tyre push lap in SQ3 cost him valuable time, and his second attempt left him 0.473 seconds slower than Oscar Piastri’s benchmark.
