Many talking points after the Canadian Grand Prix
The Canadian Grand Prix has left the Formula 1 circus with several interesting topics as it heads to Austria, Red Bull’s home, at the beginning of July, following a week-long break. These include Max Verstappen’s victory at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, which allowed him to equal Ayrton Senna and enter the absolute elite of this sport in terms of statistics.
But there’s also Sergio Perez’s never-ending crisis, the incredible fighting spirit of the two “old” lions Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, and – finally – a competitive Ferrari SF-23 single-seater. Whether it will be true glory or an isolated flash related to the circuit’s characteristics will only be revealed by the rest of the 2023 Formula One championship, but there are some positive signs this time.
Unreachable Max
These are also the topics that have animated discussions in Italian newspapers, divided between celebrating the reigning world champion – who is charging towards a third consecutive title – and analyzing the comeback achieved by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz thanks to an intelligent strategic call. “[…] no one wants or can catch SuperMax on a day that also celebrates Red Bull’s hundredth victory. Behind the leader, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton duel, stepping onto a podium occupied only by world champions: the three of them have won eleven titles, an incredible spectacle in front of a crowd that reached 300,000 attendees over the weekend,” emphasizes Stefano Mancini for the Italian daily newspaper La Stampa following the Canadian Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s resurgence
And the Reds? “Ferrari is getting closer again” – as emphasized in the Turin newspaper – “they nailed the strategy and for the first time managed to exploit the tires beyond expectations. […] The goal is to get involved in the battle for second place behind the invincible ones and, at the same time, prepare for 2024, which seems far away but is just around the corner. The race for updates continues: […] Aston Martin has brought new parts that Alonso has been able to take advantage of, giving him new enthusiasm. Mercedes should bring updates to Austria to match Ferrari and not fall behind. […]”

On the other hand, in the La Repubblica newspaper, Alessandra Retico speaks of “red hope.” “Glimmers of red after the storm. Charles Leclerc rises above the Saturday clouds, anger, a misplaced qualifying, and reunites body and soul with Ferrari. […]. An important comeback in terms of positions, but above all, for the regained pace of a car that has been limping and had proved to be bad-tempered in races so far. The updates (sides, floor) introduced in Barcelona without much success, in fact, with more uncertainties than certainties, flourish in Montreal. […]. And even the strategies, pit stops, and team choices work in a race that started uphill. Has the light at the end of the tunnel been reignited?” Time will provide the answer.
