In a championship where both world titles are still undecided, even grid penalties for power unit replacements become crucial. At Monza, almost half of the grid changed engines to enjoy fresh horsepower at the Temple of Speed, but among the top teams, Red Bull remains the only one to have exceeded the four seasonal units. On the transmission front, Norris can still afford a new gearbox before incurring penalties, unlike Verstappen, Leclerc, and Piastri.
The situation after Monza
In the Italian Grand Prix, almost all Mercedes and Ferrari-powered teams opted for a full power unit replacement, except for Albon and Leclerc. Specifically, Hamilton, Russell, Norris, Piastri, Alonso, Stroll, Colapinto, Sainz, Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Zhou, and Bottas all installed fresh units. The overall impression is that the Mercedes power units remain the most reliable, as has been the case over the past two seasons.
As of now, the only ones to have already faced a grid drop are Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly, and the two Red Bulls, namely Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen. However, with the replacements at Monza, all cars are now at their seasonal limit, with penalties ready to trigger on the next replacement. This comes with a calendar that still includes the ultra-fast Baku and Las Vegas circuits, where power units will be put to the test, and São Paulo and Mexico City, where cooling issues related to thin air will challenge reliability. Below is a summary of all components used so far.
