During the double header Formula 1 recently made overseas in the United States and Mexico, there was no lack of new rotations of power unit components. Ferrari-powered teams were again the protagonists, with penalties inflicted on all three teams that use the Maranello engine. There was no shortage of setbacks even for Red Bull and Alpine, while the only power unit manufacturer that did not get penalties in America was Mercedes, which once again shows the great reliability of their engines.
In Texas, both Charles Leclerc and Zhou Guanyu replaced the internal combustion engine, the sixth and fifth of the 2022 Formula 1 season, respectively. The Monegasque also changed the turbocharger system, which continues to be the most critical element in the Prancing Horse’s power unit. In Mexico it was instead Kevin Magnussen’s turn, with Haas opting to replace the internal combustion engine.
In Austin, Sergio Perez received a five-place grid penalty for replacing the ICE, the fifth of the season, getting in line with his teammate. For Alpine, however, the initial plans included a new engine for Fernando Alonso, but Esteban Ocon’s difficult qualifying session in Austin made the team decide to seize the opportunity and change the internal combustion engine, the battery and ECU. Finally, regarding the transmissions, between the United States and Mexico there were new parts for George Russell and Alexander Albon. Below is the table with the stats for the power unit components with two rounds until the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
