Tempers flared at the Silverstone circuit last weekend as tension escalated between Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly. Close encounters between the two drivers occurred both during the race and in the interview area.
At Silverstone, Carlos Sainz was giving interviews to journalists in the designated interview area when a irritated Pierre Gasly approached, clearly upset about a close battle that took place during the race.
The incident happened after the race and was specifically caused by a moment during the final stages of the British Grand Prix. It was lap 45 out of 52, and Pierre Gasly, in his Alpine, tried to take advantage of Carlos Sainz’s difficulties to snatch tenth place from him.
After being overtaken at Luffield (turn 7), Carlos Sainz regained ground and positioned himself on the inside. They arrived side by side at Copse, with Pierre Gasly holding the outside line. The Ferrari closed the door on the Frenchman, who had to lift off the throttle on the outside curb.
Pierre Gasly immediately became furious and exclaimed over the team radio, “He can’t close the door on me like that!” Carlos Sainz managed to hold onto 10th place, which he maintained until the checkered flag, taking one point on a disappointing afternoon for the Maranello team.
The incident didn’t end on the track but continued after the race. While car #55 was speaking to TV broadcasters, Pierre Gasly approached from behind, touching Carlos Sainz’s shoulder and saying something not so friendly about their on-track duel.
Carlos Sainz briefly interrupted the interview, smiled at the cameras, and exclaimed, “Pobrecito!” (“Poor thing or poor baby!”) before continuing with his analysis of the Grand Prix.
