Pertanto c’è una maggiore tendenza al surriscaldamento rispetto alla passata stagione. Ciò contribuirebbe inoltre a rallentare le vetture in gara con l’aggiunta di problemi nei sorpassi. In tal senso, Mercedes avrebbe suggerito alla P lunga di ridurre lo strato del battistrada sui circuiti più critici. Un battistrada più sottile significa meno movimento nella gomma e quindi meno rischi di surriscaldamento.

“Lo avevamo già fatto in passato” – ha continuato Isola – “Così era successo anche a Monza e Spa nel 2011 e nel 2012”. Le tre piste interessate sono appunto quella di Barcellona, alla quale si aggiungono il Paul Ricard e Silverstone. Tracciati la cui caratteristica in comune è data dalla recente stesura di un nuovo manto stradale. Il battistrada verrà abbassato di 0.4 millimetri, con la conseguente riduzione del peso di 1 chilogrammo per ogni set di pneumatici. Per compensare questo calo i team dovranno giocare sulla zavorra. Per fare in modo che la suddetta modifica diventasse realtà Pirelli aveva bisogno che il 70% delle parti coinvolte nella decisione sulle modifiche, Strategy Group e F1 Commission, desse la propria approvazione.

Ovviamente, c’è qualcuno che non è contento, vedi ad esempio la McLaren che non ha manifestato inconvenienti a differenza della Mercedes: “Non abbiamo problemi di blistering”. Un impasse che sarebbe stato superato mettendo sul tavolo l’argomento della sicurezza. Aspetto sufficiente per ottenere un’approvazione dei cambiamenti. La Red Bull rinuncia così con riluttanza ad un vantaggio competitivo: “La nostra vettura tratta le gomme più delicatamente della Mercedes” – ha ammesso Daniel Ricciardo. Uno dei responsabili del team di Milton Keynes ha poi ribadito: “Perché dovremmo cambiare le gomme se la Mercedes ha un problema? Bisogna vedersela da soli per quanto riguarda la gestione degli pneumatici”.
