In the last few days the case generated by the dangerous blowouts of the tires of Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen on the straight in Baku has been widely discussed. In-depth checks on Pirelli tires led to the possibility that of several teams were “playing” with variations of their pressures, overheating them beyond the 80 degrees allowed by the use of the tire warmers with the aim of gaining better grip and better traction thanks to their cooling on the track that ‘deflated’ the tires in addition to the regulatory minimums. The FIA thus released a long technical directive, but also explained to the teams that even the used tires will be checked and brought to a temperature of 80 degrees, to check their pressure.
On the other hand, the Pirelli press release issued yesterday evening highlighted “compliance with the prescribed starting parameters”, thus leaving free interpretation of tire pressures during the race. As explained by today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport, several teams would have changed the pressures: “Who was being smart? We are talking about Red Bull and Aston Martin, who started the case, but also about 3 other teams (but not Ferrari), which, despite not having accused a tire failure, were put in the sights of the FIA for incorrect practices. Yes: half of the grid in Baku was outside the required parameters”. – the Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport wrote.
