The 2024 Formula 1 season starts in Bahrain
Today in Bahrain, the first two free practice sessions will take place at the 5.412 km Bahrain International Circuit located in Sakhir, where – perhaps – the teams will begin to effectively showcase the potential at their disposal, although the definitive fireworks will only come tomorrow in Qualifying.
In the list of updates, Red Bull has brought five new elements categorized as ‘performance,’ while Ferrari has brought three. The SF-24 has emerged as the primary ‘anti-Red Bull’ team based on the stopwatch in testing, and now confirmations are expected in the race weekend, which will be only the first of 24 in what will be the longest season in Formula 1 history.
Red Bull’s Technical Director, Pierre Waché, emphasized that the Milton Keynes team had to take risks with the RB20 because the RB19 had reached the end of its development. Naturally, rivals have taken inspiration from Red Bull in 2023, and Pierre Waché himself admitted that rival teams might even do better in exploiting the potential of that type of aerodynamic concept. When asked by the French sports daily L’Equipe which teams Waché particularly fears in 2024, the Red Bull man responded, “It’s hard to say who will be our main rival. Of course, I have a ‘soft spot’ for Aston Martin because they have more or less followed the same philosophy as we did, so I can understand it better. On the other hand, I struggle to understand the superior aerodynamics of Ferrari, but it seems to be the fastest.” – he explained.
