Pierre Gasly has defended himself against criticism after posting a photo of himself skiing while wearing a jacket reminiscent of Michael Schumacher’s iconic racing suit. The French driver addressed the controversy following the official unveiling of the Alpine A526, explaining his intentions and respect for the seven-time world champion.
The social media backlash
On the day Alpine officially presented their 2026 car, Gasly spoke to the media about the new car’s features and the team’s expectations for the upcoming season. However, he also addressed a social media post from early January that had sparked widespread debate and criticism.
During the Christmas holidays, Gasly had shared photos of himself skiing on his social media profiles, wearing a red Marlboro-style suit very similar to the one Michael Schumacher used to wear. The timing of the post added to the controversy, as the photo was taken on January 3, coinciding with Schumacher’s birthday. Fans expressed outrage, calling the post “in poor taste” and criticizing its “poor timing,” among other comments.
Gasly clarifies his intentions
Speaking to the media after the A526 launch, Gasly explained that he has always admired Schumacher and that the post was never meant to disrespect him. He emphasized that Schumacher had always been one of his childhood idols and that wearing the jacket was a personal tribute. Gasly highlighted his love for skiing, which he has pursued since he was a child, and described his recent holiday as an opportunity to disconnect from his professional environment and enjoy time with family and friends.
He also addressed the online criticism, noting that negative reactions are simply part of modern life. Gasly reiterated that he has always aimed to be a respectful individual and that Schumacher remains one of his role models. He stated that his intentions were never harmful and that the post was a personal expression of admiration rather than a statement meant to provoke.
A personal tribute
Gasly concluded by reflecting on the importance of balancing professional life with personal passions. He explained that spending time skiing with loved ones helps him reset and maintain perspective, and that wearing the jacket was a way to honor someone who inspired him from a young age. He reiterated that his respect for Schumacher has always been unwavering and that his social media post was never intended to be controversial.
