Honorary degree for Piero Ferrari, who jokes about Lewis Hamilton
On Friday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m., in the Aula Magna of the Polo Zanotto, the University of Verona awarded an honorary degree in “Supply Chain Management” to Piero Ferrari, vice president of the Scuderia Ferrari.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including the Rector Pier Francesco Nocini, Confindustria president Emanuele Orsini, and Verona mayor Damiano Tommasi. Also present were Antonello Coletta, head of Ferrari Endurance, and Yifei Ye, the first Chinese driver to win at Le Mans with a Ferrari.
Piero Ferrari’s remarks
Alongside his lecture entitled “Luxury companies and the supplier chain: different stories of necessary integration,” Piero Ferrari shared some thoughts on the future of the automotive industry: “We will do what the market demands. I believe internal combustion engines are not going to disappear, hybrid cars will continue to grow in popularity, and electric vehicles will have their place. I think all three types of powertrains will coexist in the future, and we will manage them. Synthetic fuels are also arriving—they are a big innovation. They are expensive now, but they will become more accessible.”
The F1 topic was unavoidable, and Ferrari addressed the team’s current challenges: “We continue to struggle, but we are always there. We are present, we don’t give up.” Questions about Lewis Hamilton were met with a lighthearted response: “I think he, after so many years at Mercedes, has joined a new team. He doesn’t fully understand everything that happens. He doesn’t know how the car is built or developed. To make a comparison, some tennis players change racquets when they change sponsors—they don’t play the same way and often return to their old racquet. He has changed the ‘racquet’ even though the strings are the same, the car still has the same number of wheels.”
