The Las Vegas GP kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony. Exactly as many expected, the Formula 1 weekend in the Sin City has been transformed into an unprecedented event. And we’re just getting started. The drivers arrived in the paddock welcomed by a group of Elvis Presley look-alikes, with whom they later took a photo. Subsequently, the complete teams and their respective team principals also arrived.
The drivers were introduced in pairs, divided by teams, via a raised platform, reminiscent of the introduction of tributes in the Hunger Games movies. The reference, intentional or not, fits perfectly, given that the latest film in the saga is being released in theaters these days.
Colored lights served as a backdrop to a nocturnal Las Vegas full of people applauding each driver’s name. The opening ceremony then kicked into high gear. Many artists performed on stage.
Kylie Minogue, Thirty Seconds to Mars, will.i.am, Tiesto, and John Legend are just a few of the big names who graced the stage. To add even more to the spectacle, the famous and renowned Cirque du Soleil also made an appearance.
More glamour than sport
The Las Vegas GP opening ceremony has lived up to the expectations of those who described it as “an unprecedented show.”
Starting with the Formula 1’s performance to introduce its twenty drivers, you can sense the rest of the week. More glamour than sports. International showbiz stars are expected in the paddock, ready to enjoy the race weekend in exclusive clubs and restaurants. Formula 1 has become more of a cult phenomenon than a sport in itself.
