Scuderia Ferrari dazzled in Melbourne on Friday; and on Saturday they parlayed that promise into a pole beautifully won by Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez qualified second and third – but there was frustration for the other Ferrari driver, Carlos Sainz, who, with a potential pole in sight, was delayed in the final moments by a starter issue. With Perez absolved from an alleged yellow flag incident, the three English drivers – Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, all using Mercedes power units – will line up in fourth, fifth and sixth places.
The bouncing or “porpoising” problem, characteristic of the new ground effect regulations, still persists for many teams – notably Ferrari and Mercedes – and may play a role in tyre management on Sunday. In this video Peter Windsor analyses these points and more – and also recalls the dramatic moment at a Silverstone test, in 1979, when Lotus first discovered “porpoising”.
