Michael Schumacher is an absolute legend, an icon of world sports. His name is associated with impeccability, discipline, an unquenchable thirst for success and a titanic will to win. Michael’s success in Formula 1 is closely related to Ferrari. For many people, the only way to drive a Ferrari is the car rental service. Perhaps it is the synthesis of a brilliant racer and the red team that is the main reason for such popularity of Schumacher as a pilot of the Royal Motorsport.
But he might not have become a legend if not for three people who significantly influenced his career. We will tell you about them.
It is difficult to find detailed information about Michael’s childhood. It is known that he was born on January 3, 1969 in the city of Kerpen in the family of a bricklayer and a saleswoman. The family was not rich, and sometimes even poor. Due to lack of money, the father of the future legend worked as an auto mechanic. Also, his father was a member of the local karting club and at the age of four he put Michael behind the wheel of a kart. And Michael, until the age of fourteen, quite successfully performed at regional competitions, even won individual races in rental karting.
However, the family ran out of money pretty quickly, and we might never have seen the legend of Schumacher, if not for the three people to whom Michael owes his future career.
The first is Gerhard Noack. One of the sponsors of karting competitions in the region where Michael lived. Once he came to the karting track on the same day as the Schumacher family. As Noak recalled, he saw Michael drive a couple of laps, and immediately realized that the guy had talent, but he needed a fast kart. The boy’s father rejected the offer – the family had no money. Then Gerhard offered his financial assistance and provided Schumacher with the first major performances. Michael recalled that Gerhard owed almost everything.
The second main person in the development of Michael’s career is Jurgen Dilk. After Gerhard’s help faltered and more money was needed, Jurgen offered his help. In fact, Dilk became Schumacher’s first serious manager. He hired the future legend of a professional coach who monitored the physical preparation of the young athlete, and sponsored all further stages of motorsport. With his help, Michael won the German Junior Karting Championship, as well as the European Karting Championship. Then, the issue of what to do next arose.
Then a third person appeared in the life of Schumacher, to whom the legend Michael owes his further successful career. His name was Willi Weber, and already in the eighties of the XX century he was considered one of the main motorsport managers in Germany and even in the world. Willy was advised to take a closer look at the young racer and after seeing the possibilities of Schumacher, Weber invited him to try his hand at Formula 3 in private tests.
Michael tried. And immediately lapped half a second faster than any of Willy’s other drivers. In 1989, Willy entered into a ten-year contract to handle all financial and managerial affairs of Schumacher. In the same year, Michael got into the German Formula 3. Schumacher’s long and serious journey in motorsport began.
However, it seemed to everyone that Schumacher would remain just a good pilot participating in various motorsport series, but chance intervened in the matter …
Throughout 1991, Willy Weber tried to get the young driver at least a test driver in Formula 1, but all the teams asked for exorbitant amounts, for which Michael’s managers had no budget. Willie worked most closely with Eddie Jordan, the owner of the Jordan team. But Eddie also asked a lot, and so far Schumacher had no place in Formula 1.
But in 1991, one of the Formula 1 racers became a member of a high-profile scandal and was threatened with prison. Eddie Jordan, as soon as he learned about the detention of his pilot, immediately figured out the main replacement options. Schumacher looked the most preferred. A week later, an agreement is signed between Weber and Jordan – and here it is, the debut of Michael Schumacher in Formula 1 at the Belgian Grand Prix 1991!
